Description:
In order to ensure that graduates are more competent and research done fulfilled the industry requirements, UTHM continues to move ahead with further enhancing cooperation with industry partners. To achieve this, one session on signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between UTHM and Sena Traffic Systems Sdn. Bhd was held at the Banquet Hall, Level 5 Tunku Tun Aminah UTHM Library on 14 January 2019. MoA was signed by YBhg. Prof. Ts. Dr. Wahid bin Razzaly, Vice-Chancellor of UTHM and YBhg. Dato ‘Tan Boon Hock, Managing Director of Sena Traffic System Sdn. Bhd. Also present were YBhg. Prof. Ts. Dr. Ruzairi bin Abdul Rahim, UTHM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and Sena Group Technical Advisor, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Ir. Leong Siew Mun. Among the signs of MoA signed is that STS will take a strategic step by opening a research center on UTHM’s main campus to ensure that the university’s students and researchers get the information and data quickly yet continuously seek industry cooperation. Through this collaboration, UTHM is also able to generate their own income through space rental.
According to Prof. Ts. Dr. Wahid bin Razzaly, UTHM is a technical university that will help STS to produce products for the smart city market. The industry technology 4.0 (IR 4.0) used in this collaboration is in line with the direction of the country and UTHM students will also get practical exposure. Among the advanced systems previously developed by STS are advanced traffic light systems that can reduce road congestion and carbon emissions that make Malaysia’s cities more environmentally friendly. Through this collaboration also, local communities, especially nearby schools will benefit from social responsibility (CSR) activities that can be jointly implemented by UTHM and STS. The disclosure of smart city research activities can be a catalyst for school children to deepen their knowledge of science and technology fields that are needed for the country. Additionally, the university welcomes the participation and involvement of more companies to open research centers and operations at UTHM campus either at Parit Raja or Pagoh campus because of the current increasing number of researchers at UTHM.
In addition, cooperation with STS is to develop more innovative and commercially acceptable innovative products in the global marketplace. This collaboration will also benefit STSs where researchers and students can be involved in the research. With this STS will not be short of skilled manpower to complete the customer-demand project. The skills of STS engineers can also be enhanced to meet current demand through short courses that can be provided by UTHM’s academic staff.

MPBP chose Penggaram as their case study because this area is one of the fastest-growing cities in Malaysia, specifically in industrial development and education. As a rapidly developing city and growing population density, few aspects had been considered a long-term goal for the local community such as the awareness of reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. This is why MBPB has mobilized the best initiatives by involving 13 agencies that together helped towards the low-carbon town which has targeted in 2030. As a university that has created many intellectuals and professionals, UTHM has played an important role in helping MPBP to fulfill the commitment that had been set off. Since UTHM’s niche area focusing on sustainable technology and transportation, UTHM is given a great mandate to undertake research and development of low-carbon urban transport development to realize MPBP’s desire to make Kota Penggaram as one of the low-carbon by 2030. Besides, UTHM will also be benchmarked by Malaysian Green Technology Corporation in preparing the Low Carbon Town Transport Planning and Improvement Plan Framework for the town of Penggaram to be implemented in other areas throughout the country in the future. This will be one of the efforts and cooperation with the industry as well as contributing to the local community.
