Five educational institutions collaborate on research through the ‘Sakura Science Programmer’
In order to form partnerships in technology sharing and globalization of the Japanese national education system, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is among five educational institutions participating in the ‘Sakura Science Exchange Program’ sponsored by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
The program is organized with the aim of creating collaborative opportunities in research and strengthening close ties between Japan and other countries including Malaysia.
The programme was hosted by Nagoya Institute of Technology (NITech) and invited four universities from Asean namely UTHM involving four students, University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) three students, Vietnam National University (VNU) two students and the National University of Laos (NUOL) involved a student.
The idea of ??this Sakura Science program was developed by Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Fadhil Md Din from UTM who plays the role as senior advisor together with Dr. Mitsuhiro Honda, NITech representative as the university’s organizer.
This international mobility program is led by a visiting lecturer, Ts. Dr. Nickholas Earring Kids from UTHM and Dr. Nor Eliza Alias ??from UTM. Also Dr. Pham Thi Hoa from VNU and Oulavanh Sinsamphanh from NUOL were also involved in the implementation of the program.
The Sakura Science Exchange program, titled “Nanotechnology in Advance Environmental Materials,” was held for six days from October 21 to 26. Activities involved during the programme was conducting experiments such as spectrophotometry to measure the absorption rate of light by nano titanium dioxide, characterization of nano titanium dioxide using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and photo catalytic with methylene blue.
After completing the lab test, students also get the opportunity to present the results of the experiments individually and in groups. It was a meaningful experience for the participants instead of getting the chance to study nanotechnology.
A discussion session was also held to determine the direction after the program, in which representatives from universities agreed to work together forming a nanotechnology consortium based at UTHM. This international collaboration involves the collaboration of five universities, NITech – UTHM – UTM – VNU – NUOL.
The formation of the consortium is expected to form a strong collaboration between universities involved in the field of research on nanotechnology applications.
